- Description: For this recording, the drums performed alone without the singing, but on occasion with the whistles in the background provided by the dancers. Each of the 3 drums can be heard separately with its distinctive tune, the Akanono, the Cimbulunge, and the Fwanda-fwanda, each of which has a fairly complex rhythm and tone pattern to add to the whole resultant. It would appear that the Lala style of drumming are among the most evolved in N. Rhodesia. The stick, as in common in this region adds a percussive rhythm of its own and is beaten on to the body of one of the drums adding to the general welter of sound. - Description: Played with 4 notes. The notes were roughly hewn pieces of wood laid across the thighs ans played by means of sticks. In this case, the player stood behind the back of the young man on whose thighs the notes were played and beat the notes bending forward over his shoulders. The man acting as xylophone stand sat on a stool with his feet on another stool. Beneath his thighs was a large pot used as simple external resonator. The instrument is played out in the fields when preparing the winter gardens in May. Once the gardens are planted, the xylophone notes are discarded and used as fire wood, new ones being cut each year. The position of the loose notes was changed with each change of tune to facilitate the playing of the item. The pause during the 3rd recording was caused by one of the notes rolling down the boys's thigh and having to be replaced. Out of the many children in my family, there are only one or two who are of any value. My father's heart has wings, because he only cares for his own favourite among the children." Gwerure appears to be the title of a traditional tune which is well-known in the district and cannot be translated. There are many such names for old tunes, most of which have new recitative words set to their accompaniment with each generation of performers on the mbira.
