  • Description: Introduced by the 'Hino Nacional', the Portuguese national anthem. Women came out in pairs and danced opposite each other, each doing a violent dance du ventre. As soon as they are tired, their places would be taken by two others. The singing horns here are usually manufactured by a local tin smith from galvanised flat iron usually taken from old kerosine tins. One of the horns used was the horn of an old acoustic gramophone. The use of singing horns made of metal is a speciality of the GiTonga. They are played with very noisy drums and struck iron, and the result is deafening rather than musical. Party dance for men and women, with 1 brass drum Bombo, 1 small steel drum made from a bucket, 1 Chingomane flat iron, 4 Puundu singing horns, 1 rattle.

  • Description: "I want to write to my brother, Lethula, to come and see this cruel act perpetrated on his mother's child who has gone round Kolo (mountain) five times looking for the women's charm. She has seen it today. Women are hard hearted, they will not initiate a decent person. They initiate orphans. An orphan who has lost her mother. Whom death has imbued with courage. Losing one's parent is painful. I should have had an uncle who would have given me a goat to give to the waterman. To please the waterman so that he would return to the water." The "waterman" is a water sprite. Lelingoana women's initiation song with slapping hands on leather skirts.

  • Description: "We have killed the people of the Kalahari." Makgalagadi is a team of contempt apparently used by some Tswana tribes for any tribe which lives further west than themselves. This old song refers to the feuds between the Lete and the Ngwaketse tribes. The Chief Ikaneng was always called "Pududu" - 'the old man' by his people. At the end of the song one of them recites a praise to the old chief "Pududu Ikaneng." Fighting song.

  • Description: Here is one of the rare references to cannibalism in Southern Africa where it was not frequently practised. "Let us go, Achimangala Mangala, let us go. There was a man who asked a woman to marry him. This man used to eat before going to the garden to hoe, and so when he went hoeing he always came back late. A boy used to come and bring him food in the garden and he would ask the boy "how many plates of food have you bought?" This happened frequently and last of all he ate not only the food but the plates and the boy found nothing, and the man had vanished also as he was a cannibal. Story and song.
