- Description: INTRODUCTION: Spinal-induced hypotension is a well-documented complication of neuraxial anaesthesia. The incidence of which is highly influenced by the definition chosen by the anaesthesia provider. The lack of a consensus on a definition has led to differing incidence levels and minimal research in this area, thus limiting the ability to formulate guidelines until recently.AIM: The aim of this study was toreport on the period prevalence of spinal induced hypotension inthe pregnant population at Dora Nginza Hospital(DNH).METHOD: This is a single-centre descriptive retrospective cross-sectional study to determine the period prevalence of spinal-induced hypotension as defined by the researcher as: Systolic BP lower than 90 mmHg and/or a drop to 80% in the pregnant population. The study took place at the DNH Theatre Complex. Data was recorded from patient files. Descriptive statistics were used for the period prevalence of spinal-induced hypotension and factors affecting that incidence. Logistical regression analysis was used for a predictive model of statistically significant results... , Degree: M. of Medicine (Anaesthesiology)

- Type: Masters (Thesis)
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/11260/16046 , vital:80699
- Description: Background: Termination of pregnancy (TOP) predisposes women to physical and psychological complications. Although the unmet need for contraceptives is one of the major factors associated with the determination of pregnancy, this varies from one setting to another. A high prevalence of unmet need for contraception implies poor access to effective contraception, and the associated heightened risk of unwanted pregnancy and its sequelae. The magnitude of the unmet need for contraception among women seeking TOP in the KSD municipality is not known. Aim: To determine whether the unmet need for contraception is a major risk factor for TOP among women in King Sabatha Dalindyebo Municipality in the O.R. Tambo district in the Eastern Cape.Method: This was a cross-sectional study. Data was collected, using an interviewer-administered questionnaire, from 167 participants aged 18 years and above who visited the clinic for termination of pregnancy. The participants were selected randomly at the Mthatha Gateway health facility in the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality over one year. The data was analysed using SPSS software version 29. Continuous data is summarised into means ± SD and medians (IQR), and categorical data into proportions. For continuous data, the studentt-testfornormallydistributeddataandtheWilcoxon-Mann-WhitneyUtest forskeweddatawereusedtocomparetwogroups. The chi-square test and Fisher’s test were used for the comparison of categorical data... , Degree: M. - Description: The South African education system has changed a lot from the past. However, there is a persistent low academic performance among Grade 12 learners. This study focuses on improving educators' contributions to help learners improve in school. Therefore, the study determined the role of educator input factors on learner academic performance in selected secondary schools of the Amathole East District. This was accomplished in the first objective by connecting educator demographics characteristics (age, gender, qualifications, educator experience) to learner academic performance. The study also investigated how educator rationalisation and redeployment affect learner academic performance in the second objective. Finally, in the third objective, the study examined the prospects of educator turnover on learner academic performance. A case study design was used, the population being educators from Amathole East District's 52 senior secondary schools, from which a sample of five secondary schools was chosen. The focus was on Grade 12 educators from each stream, with one educator selected for each subject. The study employed a mixed-method approach, which provides the researcher with a complete picture as it incorporates the benefits of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Data from the South African School Administration and Management System (SA-SAMS), unstructured interviews, documents from the Department of Education and support from educators at the participating schools were used to collect information. Due to the large number of educators and learners' academic performance for this study, a quantitative research approach was used to identify educator demographic characteristics, which highly formalise and explicitly control the data analysed... , Degree: D. of Education (D.Ed.)

- Description: Tuberculosis (TB), a disease of poverty and inequality, is a leading cause of severe illness and death among people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In South Africa, both TB and HIV epidemics have been closely related and persistent, posing a significant burden for healthcare provision. Studies have observed that TB-HIV integration reduces mortality. The operational implementation of integrated services is still challenging. This study aimed to describe patients’ perceptions on barriers to scaling up of TB-HIV integration services at selected health facilities (study sites) in Oliver Reginald (O.R) Tambo Municipality, Eastern Cape province, South Africa. We purposely recruited twenty-nine (29) patients accessing TB and HIV services at the study sites. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis and presented as emerging themes. Barriers identified included a lack of health education about TB and HIV; an inadequate counselling for HIV and the antiretroviral drugs (ARVs); and poor quality of services provided by the healthcare facilities. These findings suggest that the O.R. Tambo district needs to strengthen its TB-HIV integration immediately.

- Description: Background: Globally, there is an overwhelming increase in the number of patients waiting for donated organs for transplantation, with a gross shortage of available organs. Lack of clear practice guidelines and the knowledge and attitudes of health care providers were hypothesized as possible reasons. We aimed to determine the attitudes, level of knowledge, and practices of professional nurses working in critical care units in public and private hospitals in Eastern Cape Province regarding organ donation. Method: The study used a quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive design to investigate the current knowledge, attitude, and practice of organ donation in critical care among 108 professional nurses working in public and private critical care units in Eastern cape. Data were collected between 26 February 2017 until 27 June 2017 using anonymous, self-administered, pretested questionnaires. The means of knowledge, and practice scores were estimated among participants, and their associated categorical explanatory variables were ascertained. Results: A total of 108 nurses participated in the study. Of these, 94 (87.0%) were female, 78 (72.2%) were black, 104 (96.3%) were Christians, 79 (73.2%) worked in an ICU, 79 (73.2%) had a diploma qualification, and 67 (62.0%) worked in a tertiary hospital. About 67% of the respondents had good knowledge, 53% had a positive attitude, and 50.4% had poor practice readiness toward organ donation...
