- Description: Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure that involves making an incision on the trachea and inserting a tube to establisha surgical airway (Serra, J. 2000). Tracheostomies can be performed through surgical or percutaneous means and may be temporary or permanent. It is usually indicated to alleviate upper airway obstruction, facilitate prolonged ventilation, and enable effective clearance of secretions (Serra, J. 2000).Past studies have shown that professional nurses, caregivers, and family members often lack the necessary knowledge and skills for proper tracheostomy care (Bhartendra Sharma, 2014). To provide comprehensive and high-quality intensive care services, healthcare professionals must possess a wide range of critical care competencies, including the management of tracheostomy care. Therefore, nurses must receive regular training to maintain proficiency in this area(Casserly et al., 2007). Given the significant negative impact on patient morbidity and mortality, all nurses and physicians involved in the care of patients with tracheostomies must acquire and implement these critical care skills... , Degree: M. of Medicine (Generic)

- Description: Antimicrobial resistance is associated with the emergence of 3 carbapenemase enzymes that hydrolyze carbapenem antibiotics. These enzymes 4 are carried by certain carbapenemase-producing genes. The emergence of 5 carbapenem resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) has become a serious public health 6 threat in South Africa and globally, and has led to the use of colistin for treating 7 severe infections. The aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of 8 carbapenemase-producing genes, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for 9 the antibiotic colistin, and the prevalence of the mobile colistin resistant gene mcr 10 1 in clinical isolates drawn from healthcare facilities in Mthatha and surrounding 11 areas… , Degree: M. - Description: Hypertension is a significant global public health issue. Dysbiosis of the oral microbiota is believed to trigger immuno-inflammatory processes that contribute to the degradation of bone and soft tissues supporting the teeth. However, understanding the aetiology of hypertension remains challenging due to its complexity and heterogeneity. Limited research exists on the potential contribution of the oral microbiome to hypertension. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impact of oral microbiome dysbiosis on hypertension risk. This case-control study included participants aged 18 to 80 who visited the Gateway Clinic in Mthatha, Eastern Cape Province. Participants were divided into 23 hypertensive individuals (cases) and 24 non-hypertensive individuals (controls). Anthropometric measurements and saliva samples were collected from both groups with prior informed consent... , Degree: M. of Science in Physiological Sciences

- Description: As thousands of individuals around the world battle with life-threatening conditions in intensive care units, millions more are grappling with the enduring and debilitating effects of COVID-19. Despite the availability of effective vaccines, the prevalence of COVID-19 continues to rise, largely due to vaccine hesitancy, which remains a significant obstacle to achieving global immunity against the virus. Vaccine hesitancy stems from a lack of confidence in the safety, efficacy, and accessibility of vaccines, which increases COVID 19 mortality and morbidity rates. Understanding the immune response elicited by vaccination could provide critical insights into the benefits of immunisation and help address vaccine hesitancy. Therefore, this study aims to quantify and compare the salivary IgG levels in individuals vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 with those who remain unvaccinated, highlighting the immunological advantage of vaccination. A case-control study design was used to conduct this study, using convenience sampling amongst 183 willing individuals aged 18 years and above from the town of Mthatha, O.R Tambo District, Eastern Cape. Participants were recruited from the Mthatha CBD, and their vaccination status was recorded and verified on the government website. Following aseptic protocols, saliva samples were collected in microcentrifuge tubes and stored in a cooler before transfer to the laboratory. The saliva samples were then analysed using the Bio-Plex Pro Human IgG SARS-CoV-2 assay kit, carefully following the instructions provided by the manufacturer… , Degree: M.
