  • Description: The Bangwe Zither was resonated with a small gourd through which it was pierced. It was plucked in this item. Each string was tuned by means of a small independent wedge. The strings of the Bangwe were of wire, and about 15 inches long. The Bangwe itself being 21 and hald inches long 5 inches broad. Self delectative song with Bangwe resonated Zither.

  • Description: It would appear from the evidence of certain writers on African musics that there still remains much confusion about the subject of African scales and modes. A tenacious misconception continually occurs, namely that African scales or modal systems are but an imperfect imitation of, or striving towards, the western system. Nothing, of course, could be further from the truth. It is with the intention of opening the subject for dis¬cussion by members of the Society and others interested in this aspect of musicology throughout the African world that this short article is now written.

  • Description: Two finger technique only. This flute was made on the spot froma pawpaw stalk. 13" flute, end blown out of the side of the mouth, two finger holes and stopped at the end. Second tune was overblown to get an octave higher. The flute was cut to shape with a pocket knife, the two holes being cut and then shapped with a piece of stick. The other (mouth) end was reduced to lenght until the finger hole notes sounded correct. Flute tunes with Umstshingozi end blown transverse flute.
